As with everything else worth seeing in my gallery, this is a colorization of someone else's work. Unlike the other colorizations, this one was of a piece that doesn't appear on deviantArt (to my knowledge). The original was a work by Tran4of3; his gallery can be found here, and the original can be found here.

The scene depicts Bowser, of the Super Mario series, shortly after claiming the Demon Crown from the famous freeware platformer Cave Story, known in its original Japanese as Doukutsu Monogatari. In the game, the person who claims the crown gains not only great and terrible magic powers, but also the power to command Misery (a powerful witch, pictured right behind Bowser holding her staff) and Balrog (the toaster/briefcase/television shaped chap in the back). I won't say more so as to avoid spoiling the plot, as Cave Story is good enough to be worth at least one playthrough.

The instant I saw this the first time, I wanted it in color. When I learned that a Cave Story remake for WiiWare was in the works, I was reminded of this picture and decided to try my hand at coloring it. I shan't insult you with false modesty: I'm quite pleased with the result.

This picture was made by tracing the original sketch in Inkscape, an open-source vector (that is, arbitrarily scalable) graphics program. The preview image is a (raster; that is, fixed-dimensions) .png image generated by Inkscape because deviantArt doesn't seem to support the .svg file format. You should be able to obtain the .svg file by clicking the "Download" link on the sidebar.
